Specimen Divorce Deed (Talaq Nama) — Format in Pakistan
This specimen Divorce Deed shows the format most commonly used in Pakistan where talaq is given in three stages over three months. Fill the blanks only as a guide; a divorce deed for actual use should be checked by a lawyer against your Nikah Nama and local Union Council practice.
How the Three Notices Work in This Divorce Deed
The first and second talaq are recorded in separate notices a month apart, leaving room for reconciliation. The third is pronounced in the divorce deed itself, which is why the deed is called final. Clauses 5, 6 and 7 of the specimen record each stage.
When One Divorce Deed Is Enough
Some husbands pronounce a single talaq and record it in one divorce deed without later notices. The law still requires the section 7 notice to the Union Council. Our lawyers explain which form suits your situation before the Divorce Deed is signed.

- Full names, parentage and CNIC numbers of husband and wife
- Nikah date, Nikah Registrar and Union Council, Nikah Nama number
- Dates of the first, second and third talaq notices
- Dower (Haq Mehr) — paid, unpaid or settled
- Names and ages of children, if any
- Signature or thumb impression of the husband and two witnesses
Stamp Paper for the Divorce Deed
The divorce deed is written on non-judicial stamp paper of the value required in your province. Our lawyers arrange the correct stamp paper in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad or Rawalpindi, so the deed is accepted by the Union Council and later by NADRA.
Divorce Deed and the Section 7 Notice Under the MFLO
Under section 7 of the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance 1961, a husband who pronounces talaq must give written notice to the Chairman of the Union Council and a copy to the wife. The talaq becomes effective ninety days after the notice is delivered, unless revoked earlier.
Sending the Divorce Deed to the Union Council
Our lawyers send the divorce deed with the section 7 notice by registered post or courier and keep the receipts. These receipts prove delivery, and the ninety days are counted from the date the Chairman receives the notice.
Arbitration Council and Reconciliation
After notice, the Chairman constitutes an Arbitration Council to attempt reconciliation. If no reconciliation happens within ninety days, the talaq becomes effective and the Union Council issues a certificate of effectiveness, which leads to the NADRA divorce certificate.
Wife Pregnant at the Time of the Divorce Deed
If the wife is pregnant, the talaq does not become effective until ninety days have passed or the pregnancy ends, whichever is later. A divorce deed should mention this where relevant, so dates on later certificates are correct.
From Divorce Deed to NADRA Divorce Certificate
Once the Union Council issues the certificate of effectiveness, the divorce can be registered and a NADRA divorce certificate obtained. Embassies, employers and second-marriage Nikah Registrars usually ask for both the Divorce Deed and the NADRA certificate together.
| Step | What Happens After the Divorce Deed |
|---|---|
| 1. First notice | First talaq recorded and notice sent — month one. |
| 2. Second notice | Second talaq recorded and notice sent — month two. |
| 3. Divorce Deed | Third talaq pronounced in the final divorce deed — month three. |
| 4. Section 7 notice | Divorce deed and notice delivered to the Union Council and wife. |
| 5. Ninety days | Arbitration Council attempts reconciliation. |
| 6. Certificate | Union Council issues certificate of effectiveness. |
| 7. NADRA | Divorce registered; NADRA divorce certificate issued. |
